A Good Word

Sometimes promoting unity within the Church requires writing for a white gaze: you compose for those who think and act white.

Hermano Alexander Jun has done just this in a rich prophetic word about the Church’s enmeshment with white supremacy. I quote my brother in full, and will let his words conclude the post.

Been trying to explain this as lovingly as I can to people who are still willing to listen yet disagree. Some Christian leaders have warned me and others about the danger of embracing secular ideology because it will lead to the demise of the church. We must take great care to guard against following the cultural practices of the world. I agree with them.

In fact as I have been studying the history of the American church I see what happens when we allow secular ideology to influence our theology. We have already followed the cultural practices of the world. No I am not talking about cultural marxism, dear family. I am referring to White supremacy. This secular ideology has infiltrated American Christian theology to the point where leaders cannot distinguish between what is white, what is American, and what is Christian. We have conflated whiteness with Christianity so much that when challenged with whiteness, some will feel like their faith has been threatened.

It hurts to know that many White Christians opposed the end of slavery and the movement toward civil rights. So yes, I am learning from the past to be careful to measure any secular theory against Biblical principles. I’m asking my fellow Christian leaders to consider doing the same.
